Coal-fired power plants produce more than 110 million tons of toxic coal ash waste every year. For decades this waste—which contains dangerous heavy metals like arsenic, lead, and mercury— has been dumped into giant unlined ponds that leak chemicals into groundwater, lakes, and rivers. Yet now the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) wants to ease safeguards put in place in 2015 to clean-up this hazardous waste.
