The money in the Land and Water Conservation Fund has been specifically put aside from offshore oil and gas drilling royalties, so that depleting one public resource pays for the conservation of another resource - our public lands, water, parks, natural places. Over the life of the program, more than half of the intended funds have been diverted - upwards of $22 billion. Full, permanent and dedicated funding for LWCF would finally make real the promise that was made to the American people nearly half a century ago, and was resoundingly reaffirmed this year, to take the proceeds from natural resource development and invest a small portion in conservation and outdoor recreation.
Full and permanent funding for LWCF is a must, and the time to act is now. Earlier this year we permanently protected LWCF’s unique structure and funding source, so we must ensure the funding goes where it is intended. Ask your representative to join their colleagues from both sides of the aisle in supporting full and permanent funding for LWCF, to finish the job we have started and fully protect the future of our most important conservation and recreation program.
Protect our public lands. Invest in our communities. Fully fund LWCF.
