Tell Governor Charlie Baker, Lt Governor Polito, and Environmental Secretary Katie Theohorides to act on energy justice today!
Massachusetts is facing an environmental justice crisis! State programs, like Mass Save, are designed to work with residents and businesses to improve their energy efficiency, ultimately cutting energy expenses and limiting carbon emissions that contribute to climate change. These programs however have failed to service many of the people most in need.
Underserved and language-isolated communities across Massachusetts struggle with high electricity bills while wealthier suburbs access the state’s energy efficiency services at 6-7 times the rate of low- and moderate-income communities and communities of color. Policy makers are currently developing an energy efficiency plan for the next three years (2022-2024).
Sign the petition below to urge Governor Charlie Baker, Lt Governor Polito, and Environmental Secretary Katie Theohorides to reject any plan that doesn’t center the needs of environmental justice and low-income communities, and increase access and remove barriers for underserved and language isolated communities across the state.
Governor Baker
Lt Gov. Karyn Polito
Environmental Secretary Katie Theohorides:
We, the undersigned urge Governor Charlie Baker, Lt Governor Polito, and Environmental Secretary Katie Theohorides to reject any energy efficiency plan that doesn’t center the needs of environmental justice and low-income communities. Everyone should have access to affordable energy to keep their homes warm in the winter and cool in the summer. Please increase access and remove barriers to the MassSave program for underserved and language isolated communities across the state, and make sure that the next 3-year Energy Efficiency plan gives families and renters access to weatherization and efficiency programs as we recover from the impacts of the pandemic.
Signed,
