PFAS chemicals pose a serious risk to human health. High exposure has been linked to multiple health effects including:
• kidney and testicular cancer
• liver malfunction
• thyroid diseases
• impacts to the immune system
• birth defects in newborns
In the Great Lakes region, elevated levels of PFASs in groundwater and aquatic wildlife - including fish and even white-tailed deer - threaten outdoor recreation and the health of those with contaminated wells and those who rely on fish and wild game. Available evidence also indicates that elevated PFASs in wildlife could lead to developmental and reproductive problems.
The people and wildlife of Oscoda, Michigan deserve a PFAS clean-up that sufficiently protects nearby public lands and waters and meets the higher state standards.
Please urge the Air Force to be responsible neighbors and properly clean-up PFAS pollution from the former airbase.
