Thankfully, due to support from Michiganders like you, our State Legislature passed a temporary moratorium on water shutoffs in 2020. This bill, introduced by Senator Stephanie Chang and signed by Governor Whitmer, also required water utilities to turn water service back on to households that have been shut off.
Unfortunately, this was only a temporary solution - and the moratorium expired on March 31st, 2021. We know that washing hands frequently can help reduce the spread of COVID-19, and it is critical that all Michigan residents have access to running water during this pandemic. Additionally we also need to ensure residents who have accumulated bills they are unable to pay have needed assistance before any water shutoff moratorium ends. We need the Legislature to take additional action to protect Michigan residents from water shutoffs beyond this deadline as a necessary public health measure.
Contact your Michigan Representative and Senator today and ask them to prioritize extending the water shutoff moratorium.
We're sorry, this action is for resident of Michigan only. Please visit the Clean Water Action Center to learn how you can stay engaged in your area!
