Put the Power in Our Hands - Support Community Owed Electric Power for Ann Arbor

DTE Energy charges rates far above the national average with customers experiencing increasingly frequent outages, all while continuing to rely on fossil fuels like coal and natural gas for 2/3rds of their generated power during this climate emergency. And as Ann Arbor works to move away from fossil fuels with our 2030 A2Zero carbon-neutrality plan, DTE is moving in the opposite direction by investing billions in natural gas.

We deserve better for our families, community, environment, and planet. A community owned utility would give Ann Arbor the ability to drastically reduce and eventually eliminate greenhouse gas emissions. A municipal power system of our own would also allow Ann Arbor to invest in consistent, affordable, and green power to our residents - instead of paying dividends to DTE shareholders.

I would like to express my support for a Ann Arbor publicly-owned municipal power utility and urge you, as city leaders, to support the conducting of a feasibility study for municipalization so that we can accomplish Ann Arbor’s green energy goals.

DTE Energy electric rates are 32% higher than the national average while many of their customers suffer from some of the longest outages annually. No one should have to worry about regularly losing power, extended outages, or heating or cooling their homes during and after extreme weather. However, this is a regular occurrence for a large number of DTE customers - despite the record profits they earn each year.

These failures are then compounded with the immediate and long term environmental impacts of DTE’s dirty power mix, receiving almost 50% of their power from burning coal while also making plans for a new natural gas fired power plant. This is completely at odds with Ann Arbor's 2030 A2Zero carbon neutrality plan.

I urge you to protect our community and our future by supporting the development and creation of a community owned municipal power utility. Ann Arbor can - and should - be a leader and the best example of a clean, equitable energy future in our region. Feasibility studies performed on behalf of municipalities frequently underestimate both the time and cost of completing municipalization efforts. Let’s ensure that the terms of our proposal are sufficient to paint an accurate picture. Thank you for your consideration.
