I appreciate your climate commitments to achieve 100% clean energy by 2050 and cut emissions 50% by 2030. Unfortunately, your administration’s actions to date are not on track to achieve your own goals, statutory obligations, or commitment to prioritizing the needs of environmental justice communities. In your first term, your Administration approved 6 major fossil fuel projects that likely increased greenhouse gas emissions up to 19%, and another 7 pending projects could increase emissions by an additional 38%.
How is New Jersey supposed to meet our 2030 climate goals if we are increasing emissions over 50% during your tenure?
This is the time for a full court press. We need all state agencies, especially the Departments of Environmental Protection, Transportation, and Community Affairs, and the Board of Public Utilities, to provide written plans including resources (manpower and financial), specific programs with interim benchmarks, and enforceable rules this year that will lead to cuts in climate pollution of 50% by 2030.
At this point, there is only a short window remaining to avert the worst impacts of climate change. Let’s make New Jersey a real leader in the fight against the climate crisis. Please stop these fossil fuel projects, and direct resources instead towards clean energy generation.
Sincerely,
[Your Name]
