Take action to stop the plastic pollution problem in New Jersey
We have to reduce the volume of waste that ends up in landfills, incinerators and the ocean.
The solution is to hold plastics manufacturers responsible for the entire lifecycle of the products they create, including their disposal. Did you know only 6% of plastic gets recycled nationwide, and that 46% of all plastic comes from packaging? That’s why we need our New Jersey legislators to support Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) for packaging.
New Jersey’s draft EPR bill (Senate Bill 426) is off to a good start to hold plastics manufacturers responsible for the waste they produce rather than forcing taxpayers to foot the bill for plastics disposal. It proposes the collection of fees paid by consumer product packaging companies (like Amazon, McDonalds, Coke and Pepsi) to fund reuse and recycling infrastructure; includes mandated reductions in packaging; and requires increased recyclability of packaging to reduce the amount of plastic waste being produced and littering our beaches.
Unfortunately, the current bill falls short to effectively address the single-use plastics crisis we find ourselves in. It must be strengthened before advancing.
Take action! Tell your legislators to strengthen and support Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) in New Jersey!
