The Allegheny County Health Department (ACHD) has proposed new rules to reduce pollution from U.S. Steel’s Clairton Coke Works. Right before Thanksgiving, pollution in the Mon Valley was so bad that we had a week of air that violated state and federal standards. Too many local residents have lung or heart problems that make them especially vulnerable to serious health problems from this pollution.
ACHD is asking the public to let them know what we think about these new rules. Contact ACHD and let them know that U.S. Steel clearly needs to do more to clean up the air. U.S. Steel puts out more pollution than all the cars and trucks in Allegheny County combined! Some U.S. Steel coke batteries are almost 70 years old – and still don’t have to comply with today’s pollution standards. It’s time for Allegheny County to take action to protect residents’ health, especially during the pandemic.
