The state senate is moving a bill (SB 790) that would rollback protections for shallow oil and gas drilling to standards from 1984. Facts and real events show the immediate need to strengthen regulations related to shallow drilling operations not return them to outdated standards used in the 1980’s.
A Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection report found violations increased from 1,834 in 2016 to 3,273 in 2017 and that over half (1,803) of those violations were environmental health and safety related. Also, most wells today—deep or shallow—are stimulated by hydraulic fracturing which uses toxic chemicals and large volumes of water, disturb land, and generate polluting waste.
