The Pennsylvania General Assembly is moving a bill (SB 919) that would restrict for training and testing the use of firefighting foams containing per- and polyfluoroalkylsubstances (PFAS), a suite of over 3,000 toxic chemicals whose exposure is associated with cancer, thyroid disease, ulcerative colitis and birth defects.
On the surface this may look like reform and a solution to this issue but it’s not. It continues to put our fire fighters and communities at risk from the dangers of PFAS and potentially shifts the responsibility and liability for contamination from the chemical industry to fire departments.
