Contact your legislators today to support the Reclaim Renewable Energy Act! This legislation will ensure Maryland's Renewable Portfolio Standard (RPS) supports the development of clean energy sources, like wind and solar, while cutting out language that allows polluting fuel sources like municipal waste incinerators, biogas digesters, burning wood and more to qualify for support from ratepayers.
Maryland's RPS Program - created in 2004 to subsidize new renewable energy development - is failing. The program is full of loopholes which allow numerous polluting energy sources to define themselves as clean.
For example, Baltimore's infamous trash incinerator, which emits toxic air pollution just blocks away from people's homes, is "clean" enough to receive millions in taxpayer dollars to continue operating under this program. This so-called “clean” energy source costs residents of our region $55 million annually in health damages — causing particular harm to the predominantly low income communities of color nearby. In the face of the climate crisis mounting every day, this can’t go on any longer.
Take Action! Tell the General Assembly to support the Reclaim Renewable Energy Act which will define renewable energy as really renewable energy, and puts our dollars into it - not into polluters.
