Clean Water Action

vote no on ballot question 3

Dear Friend,

Happy Election Season!

Ballots are arriving in New Jersey, and voting has begun! If you haven’t done so already, please confirm that you are registered to vote and check out our Clean Water endorsements before you fill out your ballot!

In New Jersey, there are also three public questions on your ballot. In some counties, these questions may appear on the BACK of the ballot, so make sure you turn it over. Your vote-by-mail pack will include the three questions as well as interpretative statements explaining each. Make sure you answer the three public questions!

Clean Water Action is urging our members to vote NO on Public Question #3.

This is asking the public if New Jersey should permanently amend its constitution to push back the deadline to redraw our state legislative districts until after the 2021 election in light of the delayed reporting of the 2020 Census data.

Demand Real Redistricting Reform!

Free and fair elections and fair and equal representation rely on fairly-drawn maps. In New Jersey, it's time to reform our redistricting process and put power where it belongs – into the hands of the people.

We oppose this amendment because it does not simply address the extraordinary circumstances of the 2020 Census, but it creates a permanent change to our redistricting process that could potentially delay the creation of new districts in the future if our state receives the Census data any later than the February 15th following that year’s count.

Drawing new districts in a timely fashion is crucial to our democracy. Shifting demographics mean that districts drawn based on the 2010 Census are no longer representative of today’s population. Delaying the redrawing of districts means that we are using outdated demographic information for another election cycle. We recognize the unique circumstances that caused the 2020 Census to be delayed, and we agree that New Jersey will have to find a solution for how to hold the 2021 Legislative Election given this reality, but creating a permanent change that will potentially impact future redistricting cycles is not the right response.

Democracy advocates in our state, including Clean Water Action, have been fighting for a more fair and representative redistricting process since long before 2020. For far too long, political insiders have controlled the process and have drawn districts that protected incumbents of both parties. This leads to less competitive elections, lower voter turnout, and less accountable legislators. Not only has New Jersey’s legislature failed to correct this, but Public Question #3 will further protect incumbents by delaying the redrawing of districts for another term.

We urge you to VOTE NO on Public Question #3.

Thanks for all you do!
